International Law Firm Rolls Out Over 5,000 Desktops Using matrix42 Empirum Pro

matrix42, a leading developer of system management software, announced recently that international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has selected Empirum Pro, matrix42's suite of solutions for total lifecycle management of enterprise networked devices. The firm has over 2,500 attorneys in 27 offices around the world.

"We were looking for a solution that could automate our OS migration of literally thousands of desktops and laptops worldwide," explained Richard Harris, IT manager for the U.S. offices of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. "We had a short list of products, and we ultimately chose Empirum Pro because of the clear, single management view and the intelligent build process that it offers."

Empirum Pro is currently deployed to over 2,000 desktops in the law firm with plans to increase that number to over 5,000 desktops by this summer.

The firm's evaluation of desktop management tools coincided with its decision to implement Interwoven's collaborative document management system and an enterprise-wide migration from Windows 2000 to Window XP.

Harris likes that Empirum Pro eliminates hard-disk imaging of PCs a time-consuming process that is part of OS installations and software rollouts. The technology includes dynamic hardware recognition that auto-loads drivers from a comprehensive database online. "We wanted to get away from imaging due to its heavy administration burden. Empirum Pro's dynamic build approach is one of its most impressive features," he said.

While OS migration was the primary reason for the selection of Empirum Pro, it is also being used to automate other operational IT tasks, leading to greater administrative efficiency:

  • Popular software applications and patches are rolled out to desktops from a central location and installed automatically. Updates are auto- scheduled for non-business hours to eliminate disruptive downloads.
  • A detailed overview of network hardware and software can be generated in seconds, to ensure compliance and standardization across the firm's global locations.

"Previously, we had ad hoc inventory systems in each office that weren't connected," said Harris. "With Empirum Pro, we now have an enterprise-wide view of our IT assets. This delivers a tangible cost-savings, since we can now see immediately where a location has purchased a batch of licenses that is being underutilized so that we can distribute the surplus around the network more efficiently."

According to matrix42's CEO Chris Tamblyn, "Empirum Pro simplifies and automates daily operational tasks for IT staff, providing greater management control while increasing productivity and reducing support costs. We're pleased that a firm with the international reputation and presence of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has selected our technology."

Empirum Pro technology supports migrations to multiple versions of Windows, including the new Windows Vista, and Linux operating systems.
